Mark 5:1-9 unveils a man possessed by unclean spirits who, upon encountering Jesus, found deliverance and a renewed identity. This story underscores God's original intention for humanity – to have both relationship and rulership. While the world often defines identity through possessions and religion through actions, God's word affirms that true identity is rooted in being His beloved children. Ephesians 1:1-6 emphasizes the depth of this truth, highlighting that Christianity is not merely about behavioral modification but recognizing the righteousness we have in Christ. Humility emerges from accepting God's perspective of us as saints, chosen and accepted in His love. It's a call to awaken to our righteousness-consciousness rather than dwelling on sin-consciousness. This profound identity shift enables us to confidently proclaim the greatness of God's work in our lives, just as the man in Mark 5:20 did after encountering Jesus. The journey to true identity involves embracing God's grace and living out the purpose of relationship with Him.

Building a Solid Foundation: Steps to Obedience // August 6, 2023 // Lead Pastor Dr Phil Willingham

In Luke 6:46-49, Jesus emphasizes the importance of obeying His teachings by using three verbs: come, hear, and act. The process begins with coming to Jesus, finding rest and learning from Him. Next, believers must attentively hear His words, embracing a life in the Spirit rather than the flesh. The final step is to put His teachings into action, not just reading the Bible to complete a task but to connect with Christ and surrender to His plan. James 1:19-25 emphasizes the significance of being doers of the Word, not merely hearers. To act upon these teachings, believers must know Jesus' words, delight in Him, and trust that God's plan is always superior to their own. By establishing a strong foundation of obedience, Christians can withstand the storms of life and build a life that is blessed by following God's plan.

Living With Passion // July 27, 2023 // Lead Pastor Dr Phil Willingham

Hebrews 12:1-3 reminds believers to strip down any spiritual fat and passionately pursue their faith journey, just as Jesus did. To regain momentum in their spiritual walk, they need zeal and fervor to fuel their passion for serving the Lord. Passion keeps one aflame and alert as a servant of Christ. The passage in 1 Corinthians 1:6-9 assures that God is alongside believers, guiding them and providing everything they need for the spiritual adventure. Momentum builders are essential in sustaining progress. Purpose directs life by design rather than default. Resolving conflicts ensures healthy relationships and a thriving momentum. Applying truth moves beyond knowing to doing, manifesting faith in action. Lastly, expressing faith leads to joy and avoids spiritual depression. By embracing these momentum builders, believers can reignite their passion and build a vibrant faith journey.

My Satisfaction Looks Different // July 23, 2023 // Associate & Student Pastor Matt Willingham

In Luke 22:24-27, Jesus teaches his disciples about the heart of a servant. He contrasts the worldly desire for power and greatness with the humility and availability required to serve others. Drawing inspiration from the anointing of David in 1 Samuel 16, we learn that determination can either drive us towards greatness or become dangerous if fueled by pride. The heart of a servant is characterized by humility, recognizing our limitations and surrendering to God's will. Availability is essential, not based on popularity, but driven by purpose. To live out the heart of a servant, we must demonstrate sacrificial love, faithfulness, and patience in our daily lives. By adopting these virtues, we can truly follow the example set by Jesus, who came to serve and not to be served.

Living Out the Love of Christ: A Call to Action // July 16, 2023 // Associate & Student Pastor Matt Willingham

Luke 10:30-36 presents the parable of the Good Samaritan, where Jesus emphasizes the importance of living out the love of Christ. The story highlights the commitment required to demonstrate love to others. The passage reveals that true love for our neighbor is not merely an obligation or a matter of proximity, politics, or shared opinions. Instead, it is about responding with compassion and meeting the needs of others, even going the extra mile. The parable challenges individuals to examine their attitudes and actions towards those in need. It reminds believers that love for their neighbor should reflect God's accessibility and availability. Ultimately, displaying the love of God requires perceiving others with a godly perspective and being present for them. It goes beyond mere actions and calls for a genuine transformation of character and identity.

The Radical Call to Love: Embracing Christ’s Example

Luke 6:27-36 presents Jesus's radical teachings on love, urging his followers to love their enemies, do good to those who hate them, and bless those who curse them. Jesus emphasizes the importance of going beyond societal norms by turning the other cheek, giving generously, and treating others as they would like to be treated. This higher level of love demanded of Christians requires a deep understanding of the grace shown to them by Christ and the transformative change it can bring about. By embracing this love, believers can receive a great reward and become children of the Most High. Practical action steps include fervent prayer, humbling oneself, learning others' stories, forgiving frequently, and establishing healthy boundaries while seeking peace with others. Ultimately, the ability to forgive and love unconditionally distinguishes Christians and reflects the mercy of their Heavenly Father.

Balancing Allegiance: Government and God’s Authority / July 2, 2023 / Lead Pastor Dr Phil Willingham

In Mark 12:13–17, the Pharisees and Herodians attempt to trap Jesus by questioning the payment of taxes to Caesar. Jesus responds by emphasizing the importance of balancing the claims of both the civil government and God. He teaches to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. This principle highlights the need to acknowledge the authority of human governments while recognizing that ultimate authority derives from God. It is essential to view governments as reflecting God's greater rule, without confusing them with the authority behind all authorities. Jesus advocates obeying governing authorities, urging against violent revolution and rebelling against established authorities. However, this does not imply unqualified sovereignty of governments over human life. As believers, we are called to submit to human authority, respecting and honoring them, while always prioritizing obedience to God. Applying the biblical witness, we are called to end blind patriotism, live as foreigners in exile, responsibly participate in the political process, and maintain the vibrant community of the Church as an alternative society.

Imparting Wisdom to the Next Generation // June 25, 2023 // Associate & Student Pastor Matt Willingham

Drawing from Matthew 11:12-17, we learn about the kingdom of heaven enduring violence and the indifference exhibited by the people. In today's society, despite having abundant resources such as access to the gospel, churches, and Christian media, there is a lack of responsibility in addressing the needs of the current generation. Judges 2:8-11 serves as a cautionary tale, showcasing the consequences of failing to impart knowledge and neglecting the next generation's spiritual growth. We are presented with three options: ignoring, complaining, or actively imparting what we have to offer. It is essential to recognize the urgency of our responsibility and take proactive steps to guide and nurture the present generation with God's truth.

The Cost and Rewards of Discipleship // June 18, 2023 // Lead Pastor Dr. Phil Willingham

The passage in Mark 8:34-38 underscores the significance of discipleship, where following Christ comes at the cost of one's life. While salvation is freely given, the commitment to Christ demands self-denial, carrying the cross, and obedience to His teachings. The temporary nature of the world is contrasted with the eternal value of the soul. The text discusses the futility of investing in temporal things and emphasizes the need to prioritize the knowledge of Christ. It presents four essential conditions for following Christ: desire, denial, death, and devotion. The passage also warns against losing one's life, squandering the soul through the pursuit of worldly success, and being ashamed of Christ. The action steps involve surrendering spontaneously and sacrificing strategically as part of the disciple's journey.

Removing The Plank In Your Eye // June 11, 2023 // Lead Pastor Dr. Phil Willingham

In this sermon, we explore the teachings of Matthew 7:3-5, where Jesus admonishes us to remove the log from our own eye before trying to remove the speck from our brother's eye. The sermon delves into the context of this concept, emphasizing the difference between judging and condemning others. We discuss the various types of people when it comes to dealing with judgment, highlighting the importance of following the Word of God and avoiding critical judgmentalism. We explore reasons why we should avoid critical judgmentalism, such as not knowing all the facts, motives, and the distinction between biblical issues and personal preferences. Additionally, we examine the danger of seeking revenge and the reality that we will all face God in judgment. Finally, we provide practical ways to see the plank in our own eye, including remembering, reviewing, and relaxing. We emphasize the need to have complete information before making conclusions and the importance of not letting judgment impede compassion towards others, as demonstrated by God's forgiveness in Christ.
